A must for all fans of the Superfunk series is BGP’s exploration of legendary Detroit producer Dave Hamilton’s funk recordings. Hamilton’s soul sides have already been explored over 3 volumes on Kent, this is also a perfect complement for those who enjoy the unique sounds of his Detroit studio.

Like their northern counterparts, Hamilton’s funk releases are highly sought-after and very rare. His awesome productions on New Day for Billy Garner produced two singles, included here. We also feature the original 45 edit of what we presume was to be Billy’s third New Day release ‘Brand New Girl’, which became a funk classic when released by BGP about five years back. The only other New Day 45 by OC Tolbert is also present and correct.

Bobby Dee, the Webb People, Gip Roberts and Dave himself represent a strong selection of the rare funk 45s that appeared on Hamilton’s labels TCB and Demoristic. Whilst Chico and Buddy, who were ever-present in Dave’s studio are represented by their great Tayster release ‘Can You Dig It’.

The records are rare, but at least you could hunt them down if you wanted the originals. You’d be unable to source eight of the 20 tracks as they are previously unreleased and include some unbelievable gems. Cuts by James Carpenter, Dave Hamilton and the Future Sounds are as good discoveries as you are likely to hear. Johnnie Walker’s ‘Funky Trip’ is a better version, complete with mad effects (a sort of Detroit dub!) of his rare sought-after 45 on the New Detroit label called ‘Love At First Taste’.
