The sessions that produced this album marked the first of only two studio albums featuring Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan. Basically, this is the same instrumentation employed by Mulligan in his classic piano-less quartet with Chet Baker, but with Desmond's alto instead of Baker's.

"At all events, the union is a happy one. The interplay between the horns strongly resembles that of Gerry with the various brass men who have teamed with him in the past. There are a couple of planned unison lines, but arrangements are at a minimum. Paul's best track, it seems to me, is 'Wintersong', while Gerry is particularly moving on 'Body and Soul'"
